Domaine Valma was founded by Valentine and Stéphane Mathieu in 2021 and today spans 5.5 hectares all within Fleurie. The name "Valma" is a combination of their names, but it also incorporates the deeper meaning of "Val" for valley and "Alma" referencing the Latin word for “the act of nourishing.” The project began with the intention of doing the best for the soils, performing soil analyses beforehand to understand them completely and respect the natural environment, and in 2022, they began their official conversion to organic viticulture. The pair farm three distinct lieux-dits—La Madone, La Chapelle Des Bois and Les Labourons (separated into two parcels, Les Rentards and Les Pallouats).
In the cellar, they work with 100% whole clusters and ambient yeast fermentations with no added sulfur. Aging takes place in a combination of concrete tanks, steel tanks and used barrels, with small doses of sulfur added prior to bottling. The 2023 vintage is notably more delicate than in 2022, showing less viscosity and overall weight.
